BITTERSWEET
"BITTERSWEET" means pleasure accompanied by suffering.
Topics such as mental illness and eating disorders are taboo subjects in today's society and are often not talked about in the open. As a result, many teens unnecessarily suffer in silence as a result of trying to achieve euphoria.
Being able to discuss taboo subjects and express how it can be beautiful too. That it is not as morbid as what people would usually think it is. This would bring awareness about mental illness in Singapore and be a reminder for teenagers who are struggling that it is okay to seek help before it is too late.
EUPHORIA
EUPHORIA is a photo book that shows the experience of how doing extreme diets to fit into the unrealistic standard of beauty can be beautiful too, and it is not as morbid as what people would usually think it is.
The standard of beauty makes people feel insecure about themselves one way or another. They would feel inclined and pressured to change something about themselves that they are not satisfied with to fit within society’s ever-changing beauty standard.
For my original idea, I wanted to go with the idea of how eating disorders can escalate to suicide. From my photo book, it was about how someone can view eating disorders can be beautiful and not morbid. Continuing from this, I plan to introduce the character as a teenage girl who is going through a tough time where she feels that there is nothing to live for anymore.
HUMANS WHO FEEL SICK ARE FAMILY
Unfortunately, depression often goes undetected in teenagers. Parents sometimes do not recognize the symptoms because depression in teenagers looks quite different than depression in adults. As a result, many teens unnecessarily suffer in silence.
HUMANS WHO FEEL SICK ARE FAMILY highlights the suffering that teenagers go through and brings awareness about mental illness in Singapore. This video is to let the audience feel concerned that situations, where teenagers harm themselves and contemplate suicide like this, is a real thing that happens and teens should not feel like they are alone, and that they should seek help before it is too late.
